AI ChatGPT 2026 Guide

ChatGPT Now Has Ads: What to Actually Expect

Sam Altman called advertising in ChatGPT a "last resort" back in 2024. On February 9, 2026, OpenAI started testing ads anyway — a reversal driven by the cost of running an AI product with 800 million weekly users, most of them on the free tier. Here's what the ads actually look like, who sees them, and what your real options are.

Ads Are Live for Free and Go Users, Not for Paying Plus Subscribers

OpenAI began testing ads for logged-in adult users on the Free tier and the $8/month Go plan in the United States on February 9, 2026. Users on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education tiers do not see ads. The rollout expanded to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand in March 2026, and to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea by May 2026, with more markets planned through the rest of the year.

Ads appear as clearly labeled, "visually separated" cards beneath ChatGPT's response — not blended into the answer text itself. OpenAI's CEO of applications, Fidji Simo, said the ads appear "when there's a relevant sponsored product or service based on your current conversation." The company has repeatedly stressed that ads do not influence what ChatGPT actually tells you.

How Targeting and Privacy Work

Ad selection draws on the current conversation and, where personalization is enabled, past chats and prior ad interactions.

Free-tier users can opt out of personalized ads, though OpenAI ties that option to a lower daily message limit.

Contextual Targeting

Ad selection is based on the topic of your current conversation, and where personalization is enabled, your prior chats and past ad interactions.

Sensitive Topics Excluded

OpenAI says ads won't appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health, or politics, and won't show to users it predicts are under 18.

Data Stays Private

Advertisers don't get access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details — only aggregate performance data like impressions and clicks, according to OpenAI.

User Controls

You can dismiss an ad, give feedback on it, view targeting details, and delete ad-related data at any time from within the ChatGPT interface.

How to Reduce or Avoid Seeing Ads

  1. Check which plan you're on

If you're already on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, or Education, you're not affected — ads are limited to Free and Go tier accounts under the current test.

  2. Turn off personalized ads in settings

Free-tier users can opt out of ad personalization, meaning ads will rely less on your chat history. OpenAI has said this comes at the cost of a lower daily free message limit, though the company hasn't published exact numbers.

  3. Upgrade to Plus if ads genuinely bother you

The only way to remove ads entirely, based on what OpenAI has announced, is moving to a paid plan above Go. Plus starts at $20/month and includes higher usage limits on top of being ad-free.

  4. Use feedback and dismiss controls as they roll out

Dismissing an ad or sending feedback is meant to influence which ads you see going forward, even if it doesn't remove ads from your account entirely.

Which Plans Actually Show Ads

Free$0Yes
Go$8/monthYes
Plus$20/monthNo
Pro$200/monthNo
Business / Enterprise / EduVariesNo

Notably, the paid Go tier still shows ads — a detail that surprised some users, since Go was widely understood as ChatGPT's answer to a low-cost "no ads, just cheaper" plan when it launched globally in January 2026.

A Predictable Move, Handled With More Guardrails Than Feared

Ads were coming eventually — the current rollout is more restrained than the worst-case version people expected.

OpenAI reportedly burned nearly $8 billion in 2025 with only a small fraction of users paying for a subscription, so some form of monetization for free users was close to inevitable. The specific implementation — visually separated, excluded from sensitive topics, not influencing the AI's actual answers, and opt-out available at the cost of message limits — is more conservative than some feared. Whether that holds as OpenAI expands to more markets and advertiser categories is worth watching, but as of today, the guardrails are real and documented, not just promised.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I see ads if I pay for ChatGPT Plus?

No. OpenAI has said Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education subscribers will not see ads under the current test. Ads only appear for logged-in adult users on the Free tier and the $8/month Go plan.

Do ads change the answers ChatGPT gives me?

OpenAI states that ads do not influence ChatGPT's responses, and that the sponsored placements are visually separated from the AI-generated answer rather than woven into it. The company also says advertisers do not get access to your chats, chat history, memories, or personal details — only aggregate performance data like view or click counts.

Can I turn off ads without paying for a subscription?

OpenAI has said Free-tier users can opt out of personalized ads, though this comes at the cost of a lower daily free message limit rather than removing ads outright. The only way to remove ads entirely, based on what's been announced, is upgrading to a paid plan.
