What Is Claude Tag? Anthropic's New AI Teammate for Slack
Anthropic didn't just bolt a chatbot onto Slack. Claude Tag puts one shared Claude inside a channel, gives it real access to your team's tools, and lets anyone tag it in on a task without opening a separate app. Here's what it actually does, how it differs from the old Claude for Slack integration, and what setting it up looks like.
Claude Tag works in the open, inside the channel — not in a private one-on-one chat window only you can see.
One Claude, Visible to the Whole Channel
Claude Tag is Anthropic's answer to a specific complaint about AI chat assistants at work: everyone ends up with their own private conversation, so nobody else can see what was asked, what Claude said, or where a task actually got to. Claude Tag fixes that by putting one Claude inside a Slack channel that everyone shares. Type @Claude with a request, and it plans the task, works through it using whatever tools it's been connected to, and posts the result back in the same thread — in public view, the way a coworker's reply would be.
Anthropic has been running an internal version of this on its own product team for roughly a year, and says it's now responsible for about 65% of that team's pull requests. That's the case study Anthropic points to most often when explaining why it built a public version.
How People Actually Reach Claude Tag
Anthropic frames Claude Tag as three surfaces built around the same underlying Claude, not three separate products:
Channel Tagging
Mention @Claude in any channel it has access to. It works the task in the open, and anyone in the channel can see the thread, add context, or take over.
Direct Message
Start a private conversation with @Claude the same way you'd DM a colleague, for questions that don't need a whole channel watching.
AI Assistant Panel
Click the Claude icon in Slack's built-in AI assistant header to open a side panel and reach Claude from anywhere in the app.
The channel-tagging mode is the one that's genuinely new. Because the whole exchange stays visible, a teammate can pick up a task Claude is mid-way through without asking "wait, what did you already tell it?" — the entire back-and-forth is sitting right there in the thread.
What Makes It Different From a Regular Chatbot
Two things separate Claude Tag from just having ChatGPT or Claude open in another tab. The first is tool access: admins can connect Claude to specific channels, data sources, and even codebases, and Claude works within whatever it's been granted — querying a database, opening a GitHub pull request, pulling a CRM record — before reporting back in the thread. The second is memory. Claude Tag keeps context per channel and per workspace, so it can remember what a team decided last Thursday without someone re-explaining it. Admins can view, edit, or delete that stored memory from the organization settings.
Every action Claude takes runs under what Anthropic calls Agent Identity: Claude gets its own account in connected systems rather than borrowing someone's login, and every credential use is logged. Commits and pull requests it opens show up authored by a "Claude" GitHub App account with a link back to the Slack thread that started the work, and an audit view under Organization settings lists every task — scheduled or one-time — across the org.
Getting Claude Tag Running in Your Workspace
Add Claude to your Slack workspace
An Enterprise or Team plan admin installs the app from the Slack marketplace or Anthropic's dashboard and starts the public beta enrollment.
Grant channel and tool access
Choose which channels Claude can join and which tools, data sources, or codebases it's allowed to touch. This step is what actually governs what it can do.
Set guest-channel rules
Channels with Slack guests default to Restrict, which blocks Claude entirely. Switch to Channel Only or Allow if you want it to reply there under reduced or full access.
Tag @Claude and hand it a task
Anyone in an enabled channel can now mention @Claude with a request. It plans the work, runs it, and replies in the thread.
Bottom Line
Claude Tag isn't a new model — it's a new way of working with Claude that's built around a team rather than a single user. The pitch only really pays off for teams that already lean on Slack as the place work happens: if requests, context, and follow-ups are scattered across DMs and separate chat windows today, moving that traffic into a shared, taggable Claude is a real change. For a solo user or a team that barely touches Slack, it's not going to matter much — the regular Claude app does the same reasoning without the setup.

Common Questions
What is Claude Tag?
Claude Tag is Anthropic's always-on Claude for Slack. Anyone in a channel can type @Claude, hand it a task in plain language, and watch it plan the work, use whatever tools it's been given access to, and post the result back in the thread for the whole team to see.
Is Claude Tag free?
No. Claude Tag is in public beta for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers. It isn't available on Free, Pro, or Max personal plans, and there's no separate consumer version.
Does Claude Tag replace the old Claude app for Slack?
Yes. Claude Tag replaces the previous Claude for Slack integration. Workspace admins can opt in to migrate within a 30-day window, and Anthropic has offered introductory launch credit to eligible Enterprise and Team organizations to help teams try it.
Can Claude Tag see private conversations or read my DMs?
Only what it's explicitly given access to. Admins grant Claude access to specific channels and tools, and it can only act within that scope. Guest-inclusive channels have a separate setting that restricts Claude by default. Every network call Claude makes under its own Agent Identity is logged and viewable in an audit trail.
